The New Album…

Seth talks to Spiral Earth about forthcoming sixth album Tales from the Bower Barrel House, which Seth has not only recorded himself but on which he also plays all the instruments. The album will be released this Autumn, all going well.

Seth has been on the road this week filming the video for new single, Hearts and Minds, and popping up in all sorts of unexpected places to play for the public.

So far eagle-eared spies have caught him playing for a couple of fishermen on Dartmoor, busking in Bristol, and joining in a local pub session in Clevedon.

Where will he be next? The video will chart a journey from Dartmoor to London, and will take in the gig at Komedia Bath this Friday. If you spot Seth, get a photo or – better – a video of one of the impromptu performances let us know via or tweet @SethLakemanNews

Monday: Dartmoor

Seth and Sean performing for a couple of fisherman (and, in one of life’s more bizarre coincidences, Yours Truly who really did just happen to be in the right place at the right time) at Burrator Reservoir on Dartmoor.

Wednesday: Busking in Bristol

The Bristol Culture blog among others were surprised to stumble across Seth and Benji Kirkpatrick busking in the city centre at lunchtime.

Wednesday: Clevedon Pub Session

Later that evening the pair were to be found in The Royal Oak pub in Clevedon, Avon, joining in a regular local music session. Folk Radio UK (who are playing tracks from the album this week on their Roots channel) responded to a friend’s urgent phone call and hoofed down there to bring in an exclusive report and photos.

Update 15 June 2010: The album release has been postponed again and will now be available on 19 July.

Hearts and Minds album artworkYou may already have seen the announcements on Facebook, Twitter and the official website that new album, Hearts and Minds is officially set for release on 14 28 June 19 July 2010.

The album will be available in two flavours: a standard single CD, and a Deluxe edition of a CD with DVD extra. No details yet of a track listing or contents for either. There were suggestions in an interview that Live at the Minack would be re-released to coincide with the new album, so it’s possible the DVD may simply be that re-released.

Free Track to Download

A free track, Hard Working Man, is available to download at You have to connect with your Facebook or Twitter account, which will post an automated and, frankly, rather spammy-sounding message to your friends or followers. You’ll then be able to download the track.

Lots of reports that the process is very prone to glitches, but most people have been able to access the download if they are prepared to give it a few tries.

First Single: Hearts & Minds

Contrary to early reports that the first single would be a previously unheard track called Tiny World, the first single will now be album title track and live favourite ‘Hearts and Minds’.

The single is officially released the week before the album, but is already starting to get some early airplay, most recently on BBC Devon yesterday morning. You can listen again on iPlayer until 6am on Thursday 13 May. The single is played around the 20min mark, with a short interview with Seth at about 1h 53m in.

Seth on BBC Scotland’s “Hogmanay Live”

Seth will be appearing on BBC One Scotland’s “Hogmanay Live” on New Year’s Eve, showing on BBC1 in Scotland, digital TV ‘red button’ throughout the UK, and streaming worldwide online.

The programme looks to have a distinctly folky flavour throughout, with performances from Phil Cunningham with Aly Bain, Scots Singer of the Year 2008/9 Emily Smith, and an “All-star” houseband featuring John McCusker, Michael McGoldrick, Ross Hamilton and James McIntosh.

The one hour show starts at 11:45 pm. It’ll be on BBC1 in Scotland. If you’re elsewhere in the UK with digital TV you’ll be able to watch it through the BBC “Red Button”, and it will also be streamed live online at The online stream will be accessible from anywhere in the world, and the whole programme will be available to view on-demand for 24 hours afterwards.

No news on what Seth will be playing, though it’s possible it may be a solo appearance as now regular band member, Benji Kirkpatrick, is otherwise engaged at the Bellowhead New Year bash at London’s South Bank Centre.

Seth Lakeman: My Music repeats on Sky Arts

The 2008 Channel 5 documentary, Seth Lakeman: My Music, is being repeated on Sky Arts 1 and HD tonight at 8pm, repeated again tomorrow (21 Dec 2009) at 11.05 am and 4pm.

The one-hour programme followed Seth through 2007 as he wrote and recorded 2008’s Poor Man’s Heaven album, and covers his career up to that date.

Similar programmes on Kate Rusby and Eliza Carthy, also well worth watching, are being shown on Wednesday 22nd.

Seth Lakeman: Live at the Minack, Seth’s forthcoming live DVD, will be premiered at two special cinema screenings next week in London and Truro, Cornwall.

The exclusive screenings are your first chance to see the DVD – in the presence of The Man Himself, no less – before its release on 7th December, and possibly the only chance to see it on the big screen.

It’ll be just like being there at the gig.
